Fiat Punto crashes in Station Road, Strood, during the early hours and causes lamppost to burst into flames

A car crashed into a traffic island in Strood and caused a lamppost to burst into flames seconds later.

Firefighters and police were called to Station Road at about 4am today after the Fiat Punto left the road, mounted a traffic island and hit a lamppost.

A crew from Strood were called and said the woman driver was shocked by the incident, but was relatively unharmed.

Firefighters used dry powder to put out the flames and made the scene safe.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: “The accident happened on the bend in the road near to the Chinese takeaway on the corner of South Eastern Road.

“The vehicle ended up in the garden of another property and the young woman was a bit shocked but otherwise she was OK.”
