Debris in the Medway Tunnel in Strood is causing delays for motorists in Wainscott

Debris in the Medway Tunnel has caused delays for motorists in Strood.

The debris was strewn over two lanes of the tunnel and delays there are on Anthonys Way, A289 eastbound approaching the tunnel.

The incident was reported shortly after 2pm when motorists dialed 999 to report concrete and wood in the carriageway.

Police have closed to the road while officers deal with the incident and is it is believed the items may have fallen from a lorry travelling along the road.

Frindsbury Hill is reported to be very slow and traffic is building up on Medway City Estate while motorists try and find alternative routes.

There is said to be a large amount of debris in the tunnel.

No one has reported being injured as a result of the items falling onto the road but officers have had to close both carriageways travelling towards Gillingham, so it can be cleared.

Motorists should expect delays

Traffic is queuing up in the Wainscott bypass area and motorists will face delays and the road is expected to be closed for at least another another hour.

Motorists are advised to find alternative routes.
