Traffic ground to a halt on part of the M2 following a crash.

Police temporarily held motorists travelling coastbound between Junction 4 for Gillingham and J5 for Sittingbourne as a result.

The crash happened at around 6.50pm and queues were backed up all the way back to Junction 3 for Chatham and Maidstone.

Drivers were eventually allowed to pass through the scene using the hard shoulder, while emergency services dealt with the crash.

It was initially feared traffic would not return to normal until 9.15pm, but highways officials confirmed the accident had been cleared at around 8.40pm.
