Crews battle huge field fire at Great Lines

Firefighters were called to Great Lines Heritage Park at around 4.30pm today as fire took hold of 2500 square metres of scrub land.

Crews from Strood attended the park in Gillingham and used beaters and flexi packs to fight the blaze before a pump was able to gain access to the field.

Crew manager Pete Sanderson from Strood Fire Station said the wind direction, coupled with the fact part of the field had been cut, helped stop the blaze from spreading further - while a footpath had also acted as a fire break.

Firefighters were on the scene for an hour before the blaze was brought under control.

It is not known how the fire started.
