Floral tributes have today been left at the spot where a man was killed when he was knocked off his mountain bike by a lorry.

The 58-year-old cyclist was involved in a crash with the vehicle in Medway Road, Gillingham, on Monday morning.

An air ambulance landed at the nearby Walnut Tree Club, but the local man was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering serious injuries to his head and chest.

He was not wearing a helmet.

Upset eyewitnesses have described the aftermath of the collision as several bunches of flowers were laid at the scene.

Patrick Coulter said: "Myself, along with my friend, instinctively ran towards the cyclist who was on the floor and I called 999 while running towards him.

"I stayed on the phone to the emergency services throughout the incident along with my friend at the man's side while he struggled for his life.

"We stayed with him until the fast responder arrived, at which point everyone was ushered away from the scene."

Another wrote: "Unfortunately me and my three-year-old were behind the cyclist at the time in our car and believe me there was nothing the lorry could do.

"I think that day has affected a few lives especially for the deceased and his family and for the lorry driver and for anyone was there really.

"Believe me though everything was done to help this poor man I promise."

Kent Police said the crash involved a silver DAF lorry, which was parked at the side of the road in the aftermath.

Officers were called at 11.25am and several roads were closed while emergency services were at the scene.

Four ambulances from South East Coast Ambulance Service were called as well as the air ambulance.

Crash investigators are appealing for witnesses to the collision or anyone who saw either vehicle before the incident to come forward.

A Kent Police spokesman said: "The cyclist is believed to have been heading from Brompton, while the lorry was travelling from the B2004.

"Medway Road with the junction of Pier Road at the traffic light junction was closed, as was Richmond Road and Bridge Road. All roads were reopened at 3.40pm."

The dead man's family have been told.
