Disabled Chatham mugging victim Bradley Hannan's quest for job

Life has become tougher for Bradley Hannan since he was viciously mugged as he waited at a Chatham bus stop last year. As if it wasn’t before.

At six stone and suffering from long-term disabilities, the 29-year-old hospital volunteer has recovered from the physical effects of his ordeal but the mental scars remain.

His phone and wallet were stolen leaving him feeling unsafe and even forcing him to move home and wary when he goes out.

The only suspect has been released without charge and police have given up actively searching for the culprit.

His plight resulted in a wave of sympathy from the community with £3,000 being raised to help him. Friends and family were delighted with the support shown, but in reality there is one thing that Bradley wants: a job.

His sister Daniela Golding said it would do him the world of good if someone gave him a chance and offered him work.

She said: "He has got lots of experience; he has worked for Royal Mail and done retail and admin work, and he is good with computers.

"Because of his disabilities, Bradley isn’t very good at interviews but he is a hard worker. He just needs someone to give him a chance" - Daniela Golding

"Because of his disabilities, Bradley isn’t very good at interviews but he is a hard worker. He just needs someone to give him a chance."

But Bradley has qualities far better than the normal achievements and qualifications that might show up on the average CV. He has overcome three brain tumours – one of which left him with little chance of survival – and he was the overall winner of the Pride in Medway Awards in 2002.

Bradley had been volunteering at Medway Maritime Hospital and was making his way home when he was accosted in Luton Road on November 18.

Since the attack, he has moved to Rainham because he no longer felt safe in his own home.

His sister: "He now lives with my mum. He doesn’t volunteer as much now because he doesn’t feel safe getting there and back on his own.

"He does go into Rainham, but he does not get out and about that much, he is a lot more wary after what has happened.

"It has not helped that police have not found anyone."

Frail Mr Hannan was dragged into an alleyway near the May Moon Chinese takeaway and punched in the head, before his wallet and mobile phone were stolen.

A boy of 17, who has not been named, was arrested on suspicion of robbery but was released without charge. Police have now revealed the case has been filed pending any further evidence coming to light.
