An investigation is underway after a dredger damaged several moored yachts on the River Medway on Sunday morning.

The incident is believed to have taken place near Medway Yacht Club, Lower Upnor around 6:30am when there was a thick fog covering the river.

According to a post on the Kent_999s Facebook page around 14 yachts were damaged when they were hit by a dredger.

The post said: "According to one sailor from Bromley, a dredger called Arco Arun allegedly struck the vessels, and then radioed Medway Vessel Traffic Services that contact had been made "with a couple of yachts"."

No one is believed to have been on board any of the yachts at the time so there were no injuries.

Some of the yachts were badly damaged and had broken masts. Picture from Facebook: Kent_999s.

A Peel Ports spokesman said: “We can confirm that we are investigating an incident involving a vessel and yacht moorings.

"We are currently investigating the incident in-line with the appropriate protocols and with the relevant parties.”
