Driver in court after Medway policewoman hurt

A man has been remanded in custody after a police officer was injured in a high-speed road chase through Rochester and Higham.

The officer was hurt when she stopped a car believed to have driven off without paying for petrol at Somerfield, in City Way, Rochester, at 10.30pm on Sunday, August 22.

She eventually caught up with it in Dombey Close, Higham.

Jonathan Cooper was charged with a total of seven offences after his arrest in connection with the incident the next day.

Cooper was charged with dangerous driving; causing injury through wanton or furious driving; driving with no insurance; taking a vehicle without consent; failing to stop for police; failing to report an accident; and making off without payment from a petrol station, in City Way, Rochester.

The 31-year-old, of Sundridge Drive, Chatham, was remanded until his next appearance at Maidstone Crown Court on Friday, October 15. He did not plea.

At the time the police officer was treated at Medway Maritime Hospital for bruising, but later released.
