Tumble dryer sparks major blaze in City Way, Rochester

Eight fire engines were sent to tackle a major blaze early today which left a garage destroyed and properties damaged.

The incident is believed to have started due to an electrical fault with a tumble dryer.

Fire, police and ambulance were sent to the home in City Way, Rochester, near the junction with St William's Way, just after 1am.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus used main jets and a fog spike to extinguish the flames and stop them spreading further.

The blaze went from the garage to the roof space of the property and caused the soffits of a neighbouring house to catch alight.

The garage was destroyed and the home badly damaged by smoke.

Firefighters were able to salvage a number of items while their volunteer response team was on-hand to offer support to residents.

No casualties were reported and the incident was declared over at 4.27am.
