Emergency services find body of man in River Medway at Strood near motorway bridge

A man's body has been pulled from the River Medway, police have confirmed.

The discovery was made near Medway Valley Park in Strood earlier this morning.

The family of a man reported missing on Sunday, January 22 after reportedly jumping from the bridge has been informed.

Police, firefighters and ambulance crews were called out before 10am and a boat went out to the middle of the river near the M2 bridge and brought the body back to shore.

One Borstal resident, who saw the incident unfold, said there were a lot of emergency service personnel at the scene.

She said what she thought was a body was retrieved from the water.

The woman who lives near Manor Lane, said: “They seemed to be pulling something out of the water.”

Another man who lives in Medway Bridge Marina but didn’t want to be named said: "I could see two men who looked like the Coastguard with the winch and the rest of the emergency crews remained on the shore."

Crews from Strood and Larkfield were called out by police just before 10am and crews took their water safety unit to the site.

Police and other agencies have been searching the river for a man who is believed to have jumped from the M2 motorway bridge on Sunday, January 22.

Officers were called at 10.20am that day due to "concerns for the welfare" of a man.

The footpath on the M2 Medway bridge coastbound between J2 and J3 was cordoned off by police until around 1.30pm while a search was carried out.

Searches have also been taking place to find missing teenager Ben Savage, 18, who went missing after a night out in Chatham in December.

Firefighters were also called to help.

This afternoon, a police spokesman confirmed the body of a man was found this morning.

She added: "As part of a pre-planned water search involving Kent Police’s search and marine unit, officers discovered the body of a man beneath the M2 motorway bridge at 9:30am on Wednesday, February 1. 2017.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious and the family of a man reported missing on Sunday 22 January 2017 have been informed."

"A report will now be prepared for the coroner."
