A worker who spends her days dealing with upset people and listening to complaints has been nominated as a Hospital Hero for her friendliness and support.

The Medway Messenger has again teamed up with Medway NHS Foundation Trust to run the awards giving readers the chance to nominate someone who deserves a special thank you.

Melanie Rodriguez is a concierge at Medway Maritime Hospital and her role includes dealing with people’s grievances and being a patient advocate.

She was nominated by Tracy Wade who said: “Last year when my grandmother was admitted to hospital Melanie went above and beyond to help my whole family during what was a very stressful and emotional time.

“She was amazingly supportive and helped organise all the social care my grandmother required.

“Unfortunately the care was not needed as she sadly passed away but without Melanie’s support and care I’m sure our experience would have been very different. She really deserves to be recognised for her conscientious manner, she is a huge asset to the hospital.”

Melanie, from Walderslade, has worked full time at the hospital for 21 years. Her son also works there in the pathology stores.

The 46-year-old said: “I am flattered to be nominated. I do my job because I love it and I feel honoured that someone has thought enough of the job I do to put pen to paper and nominate me.”

The hospital was placed in special measures 18 months ago, but staff are regularly praised for their hard work in difficult circumstances.

Now is the time to recognise those who really make a difference, from cleaners and porters, to tea trolley volunteers, midwives and doctors.

Write to: Hospital Hero, Medway Messenger, Medway House, Ginsbury Close, Sir Thomas Longley Road, Medway City Estate, Strood, Kent, ME2 4DU or email hospitalhero@thekmgroup.co.uk.

Include a short description of why they deserve the award, what department they work in, and your address and phone number. The closing date is April 13.

The winner will be announced at an awards night later this year.
