A postmortem is being carried out after an elderly woman died following a fall down stairs at her home in Gillingham.

A postmortem is being carried out after an elderly woman died following a fall down stairs at her home in Gillingham.

The emergency services were called to Saunders Street in the town on Friday March 28 following the accident just after 1pm.

South East Coast Ambulance paramedics attended along with the air ambulance which landed nearby in the grounds of Medway Park leisure centre in Mill Road. Police also attended.

The woman, aged 73, was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering head injuries.

The air ambulance report described the nature of the accident as a "fall on and from stairs and steps."

A spokesman for Kent Police said: "Police were called to Saunders Street, Gillingham on Friday, following a report that a 73-year-old woman had died following a fall from the stairs. The woman’s death is not being treated as suspicious."

The coroner has been informed and a postmortem is taking place.
