Firefighters were called to Medway Maritime Hospital this morning to reports of smoke affecting the baby unit.

The problem was caused by a smoking drive belt in the plant room for the ventilation system.

The unit was not evacuated but the number of staff was restricted and the babies in the incubators were closely monitored.

The trust runs the Medway Maritime Hospital, Gillingham

Crews from Medway and Strood stations attended the incident which took place around 11am.

The Natwest bank in Rainham was also evacuated today when the smoke alarm went off at around midday.

The alarm had been set off by workmen on the roof.
