Firefighters were called to a flat in Rochester after a resident fell asleep leaving his meal cooking on the stove - for the second time in weeks.

Crews were called to the second-floor self-contained apartment in Association Walk at about 6pm after a smoke alarm triggered an emergency care line.

When they arrived they believed they were dealing with a faulty alarm, but then noticed, a man in his 50s unconscious in a chair.

Crew manager Pete Sanderson said they administered first aid and waited for paramedics.

Mr Sanderson said: "We went to the same flat just before Christmas.

The man was extremely lucky. We all know that smoke can kill, so it could have been a lot worse."

The flat was smoke-logged but did not spread to the rest of the block on the Warren Wood estate. It is not believed the man was taken to hospital.

Crews from Medway and Strood spent about hour dealing with the incident.
