Rainham cueman Gerard Greene suffered a first round defeat to reigning champion Shaun Murphy in the UK Championships.

Greene (pictured) lost the match against the world number three 9-5 at the Telford International Centre on Saturday.

Murphy made the only 100 plus break, as he scored 101 in the fifth frame but Greene, who is currently ranked 32 in the world, did show moments of class with a break of 96 in the final frame of the afternoon session.

The win was completed by Murphy in style with breaks of 88 to send Greene home on the first day of the competition.

Greene had progressed to the finals after beating Thailand’s Thepchaiya Un-Nooh 9-5 in the qualifiers at Pontin’s in Prestatyn.
