The M2 has reopened after a huge clean-up operation following a crash in the early hours.

A lorry spilled 700 litres of diesel over a stretch of the motorway when it hit the central reservation and its fuel tank split at around 4.15am.

The road was closed coast-bound between junction 1 for Strood and junction 3 for Chatham until just after midday.

Police said there was "diesel all over the carriageway".

Motorists faced gridlock throughout the morning, with drivers heading for Dover advised to use the M20. Diversions were in place via the A228.

Firefighters were called shortly after 4.30am to help deal with the accident site.

The vehicle had been recovered by 11am but the road remained closed for another hour for the fuel to be cleared by a gritter and sweeper.
