Mark Stimson believes reserve team football is important for players to get match fitness

GILLINGHAM face Dagenham for the second time in two days today after manager Mark Stimson decided to reinstate the reserve team.

Previous manager Ronnie Jepson scrapped the second eleven, but Stimson feels the additional matches will be vital for his squad.

He said: “I think it’s very important that the players who aren’t playing in the first team get match fitness, because when you ask them to come into the team at a tempo I’m going to be asking, if they haven’t played for several weeks then it’s hard to judge those players.”

Stimson will look at a number of trialists at Dagenham in what will be the first of several reserve team games.

“Because of my connections I’ve got in the game we could get a game every other week at least,” he said.

“We’ve got the likes of Dagenham, Southend, Grays, possibly Charlton, West Ham, Colchester and those types of teams who will play us.

“There’s a minimum of three trialists to look at who came in on Monday to train and were bright so we’ll keep the conveyer belt going.”
