Gills squad only needs a couple more additions

Mark Stimson feels he is on the verge of making Gillingham a force to be reckoned with in League 1.

The Gills boss believes that he is just a couple of signings away from having a team that can compete at the top and a home draw in the Carling Cup second round against Premier League Blackburn could help him get the finances he needs.

"I feel that with one or two additions here we could be on to something really good," he said.

"I don’t think we will get those additions this transfer window because to add who I want to add is going to be financially quite big.

"What we have to make sure we do is keep who we do have and, at Christmas, if we are in a good position and have a chance, then we might have to dig deep."

Stimson’s side have made an impressive start to the campaign with a 5-0 opening win over Swindon last weekend and a Carling Cup victory over Championship side Plymouth.

Complacency, though, is something he’ll be warning his players about.

"The more you win, the more confident you get," he added.

"The way we performed against Plymouth is just going to help grow the players with a little more confidence and belief. We are on a run and need to maintain it.

"That run will stop if we stop doing the things we have done in the two games."

Stimson faces a team managed by John Barnes at Tranmere tomorrow (Saturday) and he said: "It gives the game a bit more of a spotlight because he is in charge.

"We say it all the time, just play the game, that’s all it is. Not the occasion."

Stimson will recall Mark Bentley to the team tomorrow (Saturday) after resting him for the Carling Cup clash.
