Thick black smoked filled the sky after a roof caught fire in a quiet residential street.

Two fire crews were called to Oakleigh Close in Walderslade, Chatham, at 9.10pm last night.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: "The roof was well alight, with heavy smoke logging in the rest of the property."

The blaze destroyed almost half the roof. Stock picture.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus used a thermal imaging camera to locate and knock down hotspots with a hose reel jet.

The operation continued with the use of a positive pressure ventilation fan to clear smoke from the property.

Nobody was injured and the fire was extinguished at 10pm.
