An historic Kent bridge has been shortlisted for an international award following a major refurbishment project.

Rochester Bridge which spans the River Medway has been selected as an example of the positive impact civil engineering can have on local communities by The Institution of Civil Engineers.

Sue Threader, bridge clerk at the Rochester Bridge Trust which owns and maintains the crossing, said: “We also wanted to make the most of the opportunity to highlight the potential of civil engineering, both in everyday lives and as a future career choice, and so we utilised the refurbishment as a learning tool so that families and people of all ages could be inspired.”

The Rochester Bridge refurbishment project is now competing against six other engineering schemes worldwide with the previous winner being the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

You can vote for the project to win at the People's Choice Awards here.
