Police hunt driver of stolen car after crash in Luton Road, Chatham

A man who fled the scene of a three-car crash in a busy residential road was driving a stolen vehicle.

The collision happened in Luton Road, Chatham at about 1.45pm on Sunday near to the road's junction with Short Street.

The second crash took place in Luton Road, Chatham on Sunday afternoon

Police spokesman Martin Very said: "Kent Police was called to a collision involving three cars in Luton Road, Chatham at 1.45pm on Sunday, November 28.

"Officers attended the scene where no injuries were reported. One of the drivers had left the scene prior to their arrival and inquiries are underway to identify him. The car he had been driving was later reported as stolen.

"Witnesses who have not yet spoken to the police and anybody with information that may assist the investigation should call Kent Police on 01634 792209, quoting reference number 28-0644."

The incident came a day after another serious crash saw a man in his 40s tragically killed, just yards away.

Three men were arrested after the pedestrian died in the early hours of Saturday after being struck by a van that mounted the pavement.

The Ford Transit had been travelling towards Chatham Hill at about 12.40am on Saturday when it hit the man who is thought to have lived locally. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said an unknown number of occupants fled the van on foot. But a 45-year-old man from Spalding, Lincolnshire, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
