Jake Johnson killed in crash in Strood

Jake Johnson, 20, died on November 20, last year when the car he was driving hit a wall in foggy conditions.

Jake was driving three passengers in a Renault Clio when the vehicle hit a wall in Brompton Farm Road, Strood.

He was on his way home from a party in Reading to celebrate his cousin’s birthday. Moments before the crash happened the pair had picked up two friends from the petrol garage on the corner of Brompton Farm Road to give them a lift home.

Jake was cut free from the vehicle but was pronounced dead at the scene.

An inquest heard how Jake was under the legal drink-drive limit. Police were unable to determine the speed he was travelling at but the passengers in the car thought it was around 40mph.

The coroner said she was unable to establish why Jake had crashed the car. She recorded a verdict of accidental death.

Jake was a keen Arsenal fan and played for a number of teams in the Towns, including Hoo Institute FC.

His death provoked an outpouring of grief at the scene and also on Facebook. More than 500 people attended his funeral.
