A photographic competition launched this month will put Rochester in the spotlight.

The Rochester Photography Awards will include all aspects of the town from architecture, landscapes, food and drink but it also has a selfie category.

The are two groups, one for amateur photographers over 18 and young photographer for under 18s. A judging panel of nine experts will select a winner in both classifications.

Entries from the 12 finalists will go on show in August at the Halpern pop-up gallery above Cafe Nucleus in the High Street.

Their work will then be open for public voting with the candidates bidding for the crown in each class.

Finally, a 2022 charity calendar including all 12 pictures will be produced with proceeds going towards Step and Learn, a Medway charity which supports children with cerebral palsy.

Shane Waterman, who is in charge of marketing and tourism for Visit Rochester UK, said: "For nearly 200 years, photographers have been recording life in around the city of Rochester.

"As a result, a substantial collection of images documenting the life and social history of one of Britain's historic gems now exists, held in the Medway Archives over the bridge in Strood and in private albums in homes all over the area and beyond."

The programme is organised by the New Openings Group, an events organiser business.
