A pensioner had to be rescued by lifeboat crews after suffering a suspected stroke aboard a yacht in the River Medway.

Both Sheerness lifeboats were launched on Monday afternoon and located the craft alongside the Medway Yacht Club pontoon at Upnor.

Crews then gave casualty care assistance to a man in his 70s who it was believed had suffered a stroke, before helping transfer the man to a waiting Kent ambulance.

A South East Coast Ambulance service spokesman said: "We received a call at 2.10pm and sent a crew in one ambulance and two cars following reports of a man in need of medical attention.

"He was assessed and treated at the club before being taken to Medway Maritime Hospital."
