A volunteer litter picker couldn't believe her luck when she found a one million pound banknote on her route.

Grandmother Beryl Payne was walking from the railway bridge in Rochester along the lower High Street when she found half a note with £1,000,000 written on it.

She showed it to a pair of shop owners nearby and then continued, only to find the other half further along.

The 77-year-old said: "I went back to show them and they said 'now you can share with us', I said 'I might be able to pay someone to pick up the litter!' We had a good laugh over it."

Mrs Payne had picked up rubbish with the New Road PACT group, which looks after the south of River ward, once a month for two years, before the pandemic.

Last Saturday's litter pick was organised by the shop Naked Products Co, in High Street.

The Rochester resident said: "I knew it was impossible, there aren't £1m bank notes.

"So you never know what you might find when you litter pick. Sadly, it was non-negotiable, but it gave everyone a good laugh."
