A289 Wainscott bypass blocked after crash involving lorry and car

A man was left trapped in his car following a crash involving a lorry.

The driver, in his early 50s, had to be cut free by firefighters and was assessed at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital.

It happened at the Wainscott Bypass just before 5pm.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman confirmed: "Crews used rescue cutting gear to remove the roof of the car, to gain access to him."

Two fire engines were sent to the scene and witnesses reported seeing three ambulances.

The crash happened close to the A228 Four Elms Hill and B2108 Hoo Road, and caused lengthy queues on the eastbound carriageway.

A police spokesman earlier said: "We were called at 4.55pm regarding a collision on the A289 at Wainscott involving van and a car.

"Police officers and South East Coast Ambulance Service are currently at the scene where a man is receiving medical treatment for injuries.

"The road is currently closed while emergency services are dealing with the incident and drivers are advised to seek alternative routes."

Highways officials confirmed the tailbacks cleared by around 8pm.
