Highways England confirmed both carriageways are closed while paramedics and police attend the scene after the crash shortly after 3pm.

Traffic officers dealt with a large diesel spillage across the road and investigation work carried on in to the evening.

An ambulance service spokesman said: "I can confirm that we were called at approximately 3.10pm to reports of an RTC involving an HGV. Ambulance crews have attended the scene and were joined at the scene by the air ambulance service in a road vehicle rather than by helicopter.

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police was called to the M2, between junctions three and four, at 3.11pm following a report of a road traffic collision.

"It is reported that a vehicle travelling coastbound was in collision with the central reservation before coming to a stop in the Londonbound carriageway.

"The driver’s condition is serious and he was taken to hospital. The M2 is currently closed in both directions."

The motorway reopened at 5.30am.
