Part of the M2 was closed in both directions after a river of 'sewage' flooded the carriageway.

Highways England confirmed the motorway was closed coastbound and London-bound between junction 2 (Strood/Rochester) and junction 3 (Chatham/Rochester).

It happened at around 5pm.

It is understood to have been caused by a burst sewage pipe, which brought the waste gushing down from an embankment.

Mark Andrew posted the video below on Twitter, saying he heard a loud bang and then saw the sewage pouring down onto the motorway.

Officials have since confirmed the London-bound carriageway has reopened and two lanes remain closed coastbound.

The coastbound section was then closed for around an hour to allow a clean-up operation to be carried out.

It later reopened at 8.40pm.
