Rochester man charged after van towing caravan rams police car

A man from Rochester has been charged after a van towing a caravan rammed a police car in Wiltshire.

Wiltshire Specialist Ops team posted on Twitter after officers stopped a van near Swindon at around 1.30am on Sunday July 12.

"One of our #roadspolicing vehicles was damaged this weekend after being rammed by a stolen van towing a caravan," they wrote. "The suspect drove off but was later located and arrested by @SwindonPolice.

"He has been charged with a number of offences. The RPU officers were ok too."

Wiltshire Police said Simon Coates, 43, from Rochester, has been charged with criminal damage, dangerous driving, failing to stop and 'bilking', which means taking fuel without paying for it.

He was released on conditional bail and is due to appear at Swindon Crown Court on August 14.
