A man found dead in an alleyway near a busy road in Rochester has been identified.

Police and ambulance crews were called the Esplanade at 12.50pm on Monday after a man was found lying on the ground.

A police spokesman today confirmed he has now been identified and his next of kin have been informed.

The man, who was 59 and in his running gear, was declared dead at the scene.

Police are not treating his death as suspicious and it is believed he died from natural causes.

The case has been passed to the coroner, who is awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination.

The results will reveal whether an inquest is required or if his death will be registered under natural causes.

An ambulance service spokesman said: "We were called to reports a man had collapsed.

"We sent two ambulances and a car, but despite the crews best efforts the man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene."

Ambulance crews worked to help him for hours, but the scene was cleared and the road re-opened at around 4pm.
