Gillingham High Street cordoned off after alleged racist attack

A man is in court today after an alleged racist attack put a victim in hospital.

On Sunday at 12.30am a 30-year-old man was assaulted in Gillingham High Street, near its junction with Canterbury Street.

Police officers on patrol intervened and arrested Oluwafeyikemi Ige, 27, of no fixed address, on suspicion of assault.

The assault happened on Sunday at 12.30am in Gillingham High Street, near the junction with Canterbury Street (15109362)

Ige has since been charged with racially aggravated assault.

He was remanded in custody and appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court on Monday, August 12.

The case was adjourned and he was remanded on bail until Wednesday, September 4.

He will then appear at Medway Magistrates Court for a case management hearing.

The victim was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital for treatment to a head injury.
