Homes evacuated as man injured after handling historic explosive device in Wainscott

A man was taken to hospital after being injured by a historic explosive device.

Emergency services and bomb disposal experts were called to an address in Wainscott, Strood, just before 8.30pm last night.

Nearby homes were evacuated after the incident in Rolvenden Road with the device believed to be from the Second World War or earlier.

Police say the man was taken to hospital with a hand injury caused by an explosion, but his injuries are not life threatening.

An explosive ordnance disposal unit is still at the scene this morning, assisting police to ensure the property is safe.
