Police search at Rochester Bridge leads to arrest after 'false report'

A man is being questioned on suspicion of wasting police time after reports which led to a river search were deemed to be false.

Police were called to reports a person was in the water near Rochester Bridge at 7.23pm last night.

Emergency services including police and the coastguard were sent to the scene near the Esplanade on the banks of the River Medway.

A police spokesman said a search was carried out but was determined the report "had been falsely made".

A man in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of wasting police time and remains in custody while inquiries continue.
