Londoner Justin Rockwood assaulted sleeping Chatham man with a screwdriver

A man has been sent to prison for 12 years after assaulting his sleeping victim and stabbing his feet with a screwdriver.

Justin Rockwood broke into the home of an acquaintance in Chatham.

Whilst he slept Rockwood began punching and kicking him and stabbed his feet with a screwdriver.

The 33-year-old continued the assault using a kitchen knife and a cooker guard.

The victim managed to escape and call for help.

He was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital to be treated for cuts, bruises and a fractured toe.

DNA on the screwdriver proved Rockwood carried out the attack.

Rockwood, of Chinbrook Road in Grove Park, London, tried to evade arrest but was arrested on March 24 at Lewisham Police Station.

He was picked out during an identification procedure and later charged with wounding with intent.

He was found guilty of wounding with intent following a trial at Maidstone Crown Court.

Officer in the case, PC Lauren Evans said: "This was a vicious and unprovoked assault on a man who was asleep in his own home.

"The injuries the victim suffered were serious and it is only down to chance that they were not a lot worse.

"Rockwood knew he was wanted and tried to avoid arrest, however, our officers were persistent in their efforts to track him down.

"It is only right that he serves a prison sentence for his actions."
