Match tribute to Gillingham teen Sonny Pataria, found dead in the River Medway near Chatham in 2009

Family and friends of a teenager who died after falling into the River Medway took part in a football match in his memory.

The match was played to remember Sonny Pataria who drowned five years ago – just two days after celebrating his 18th birthday.

The former New Brompton College student, who lived in Woodlands Road, had been at a wedding reception at Chatham’s Historic Dockyard when tragedy struck.

Sonny is thought to have fallen in while walking along the river’s edge in Chatham.

The popular football fan’s body was found in the river at Gun Wharf, Chatham, on February, 11, 2009. bAn inquest later recorded a verdict of accidental death.

Soccer tournament in memory of Sonny Pataria

Since his tragic death, his family have been holding fundraising events and this year his cousin Yasmin Pataria organised an indoor five-a-side tournament.

It raised £260 which will be donated to RNLI.
