Medway coastguards assisted after a boat ploughed into a jetty in thick fog this morning (Friday).

Lafarge cement works jetty in Gravesend was badly damaged after the boat collided with it just before 7am.

Members of Gravesend RNLI and Medway Coastguard went to the scene off The Shore to search for people who may have fallen overboard, but no-one had.

Nobody is believed to have been seriously hurt.

Richard Rodgers, deputy station officer with Medway Coastguard, said: “We were called initially to reports of people shouting for help near the jetty.

“The vessel had severely damaged the jetty and was taken to Southend for further investigations.

“Everyone was accounted for and we understand police are now trying to get to the bottom of what happened.”

The coastguards returned at about 8am.
