Resign now, is the advice one Kent MP has given Foreign Secretary David Miliband following his controversial assessment of the Labour party in the national press.

Rebel Medway MP, Bob Marshall Andrews has called on Mr Miliband to resign from the cabinet, after he penned an article for the Guardian on Wednesday.

Mr Miliband, who has been tipped as a possible successor to embattled PM Gordon Brown, called for a reinvigoration of the Labour Party to recapture the success of the Blair years.

Some believe it to be a thinly veiled shot across the bows at Mr Brown and the start of Mr Milibands challenge for leadership of the Labour Party.

Mr Marshall Andrews said: "I think he should resign, resign or be sacked from the cabinet. This is a direct challenge to Gordon Brown and you can not have people like that in the cabinet.

"It is fine as a back bencher but you can not act like this as a minister.

"I think a unified party is much better but I agree with some dissent.

"If Mr Miliband wants to mount a challenge he should resign his position and then do so."
