The Medway Towns are one of the top 10 safest places for students to live, new university crime rankings have revealed.

In the analysis of 535,468 crimes in areas where students live in 64 towns and cities in England and Wales, Medway ranked seventh with 100.5 crimes per thousand residents.

Egham, Surrey, was the safest place to live with only 56.6 crimes, whilst Brighton was the most dangerous with 829.4 crimes. Canterbury ranked 13th with 136.9 crimes per thousand.

The rankings are based on how many recorded crimes student areas experienced per thousand residents between February 2014 and January 2015.

Whilst the crimes affected both students and non-students, as no data is currently available for crimes specifically against students, all crimes took place around hubs of student accommodation.

Student property company sturents.com carried out the research. Co-founder Michael Rainsford said: "Crime statistics serve as an important metric for students looking to make an informed choice about where to live.

"This year so far has been huge for investment in the student accommodation market. We hope that going forward student safety will be high on the agenda."
