Two more large buildings have been blown up at Kingsnorth Power Station near Hoo this morning.

The 71-metre high buildings were brought down as part of the next stage of demolition.

Site owners Uniper UK, formally Eon, carried out controlled explosions at 8am.

The buildings were once used for the plant’s four generating units to remove oxygen and other dissolved gases from the water which was fed into the boilers to create steam.

This steam drove the turbine generators and in turn, produced electricity. This important process helped prevent corrosion of the boiler piping.

Before the blasts, Neil Riley, head of demolition at Uniper, said: “The next controlled explosive event at Kingsnorth will see approximately 6,000 tonnes of steel brought to the ground.

“The timing for this particular demolition has been planned to coincide with low tide, therefore causing minimal disruption to wading birds and other local wildlife.

“There will be four more explosive demolitions before the chimney is brought down early next year.

“We’re expecting the whole project to be completed by the end of 2017.”

Other buildings, like the 35-metre turbine hall and other structures, have already been blown up at the site.

The demolition was watched and photographed by onlookers at Riverside Country Park, in Gillingham.
