A mother-of-two has set up a petition to try and make crossing the road safer for children in Strood.

Gemma Broad, 33, says trying to cross the road outside her children's school is dangerous and ideally would like a crossing installed.

Her two sons, Michael, 10 and Charlie, six, both go to Bligh Primary School.

The school has undergone some expansion work has a new entrance in Albatross Avenue, opposite Bligh Way children's park.

Ms Broad, felt so strongly about it she started the petition which she wants to present to Medway Council.

She said: "At school drop-off times in the area is so busy and when the children come out of school, they are excited to head to the park.

"The trouble is motorists come round the corner from Bligh Way and Parkfields so fast, its just dangerous, they are blind bends for people trying crossing the road.

"I have seen adults having trouble crossing it, let alone children.

"Other mums feel the same and we just want to see some sort of crossing installed so it is safer for everyone. "

Ms Broad set up the online petition yesterday and so far, almost 250 people have signed it.

She has also written to her MP Kelly Tolhurst to see if she can help get a crossing installed.

Ms Broad, added: "It doesn't matter what sort of crossing it is, we just want to make it safer for children before an accident or fatality occurs.

"These kids are put in danger every single day to get to school, there is no Lollypop lady or anything."

Mark Ashman, 51, who lives in nearby Copperhouse Road, said the situation is made worse because some inconsiderate parents park on the pavements and on the zig-zag lines right outside the school gates.

Mr Ashman said: "We have complained to the school and they tell us they have told the parents, but it still keeps happening. We've also complained to Medway Council about the situation.

"We have disabled people living in the area and they often have to go onto the road just to get past the cars which are parked on the pavement.

"These drivers make the situation even more dangerous."
