Police catch 36 drivers breaking law on Maidstone Road, Rochester

More than 30 on-the-spot fines were issued to drivers one on road in just three-and-a-half hours yesterday.

In total 36 motorists were caught on Maidstone Road, Rochester, during an operation which began at 10am and finished at 1.30pm, equating to one every six minutes.

Trainee officers slapped 13 people with speeding tickets, caught seven people using their phones, 11 not wearing a seatbelt and five more for various driving offences including having unlawful number plates.

Police caught 36 motorists in three-and-a-half hours

Offenders driving while using their phones face a maximum fine of £200 and six penalty points on their licence. The minimum penalty for speeding is a £100 fine and three points.

Police Constable Georgina Bryans said: "These probationer officers have gained valuable experience interacting with the public and I hope these results will act as a deterrent to other motorists.

'There is no excuse for using a mobile phone at the wheel, or driving above the speed limit, and choosing to do so needlessly endangers the lives of road users.

"We regularly carry out operations of this nature and will continue to do so."
