Members of the public will be able to delve into history at Medway’s new archive centre from tomorrow (Tuesday).

People can go to explore the improved centre and can access material there including irreplaceable documents such as the baptism register containing the entry for Will Adams.

The centre also holds the parish register recording the burial of Pocahontas.

The new centre will be open to the public in the morning.

The storage room is specially designed and temperature controlled to preserve the archives for future generations.

The facility, which is now in the former Strood Library building in Bryant Road, has been transformed over the past year.

People can see irreplaceable documents at the new centre.

The project has involved months of careful relocation and acclimatisation of thousands of documents from the previous site to this bright modern centre.

Following the revamp, there are more historical records available to view online than ever before.

Staff at the new archives centre will be opening to the public on Tuesday.

Experts will be on hand at the centre to help people with searches.

For more detailed research there is also a dedicated quiet room for the study of precious and irreplaceable historic documents.

The new centre is in Bryant Road, Strood.

The centre was officially opened by Cllr Howard Doe, who is in charge of community services, this morning.

Cllr Doe, said: “I was pleased to officially open the new and improved Medway Archives Centre this morning.

"It’s a bright new facility that’s going to help local people delve into Medway‘s history as well as their own.

"Following the revamp I hope lots of people will enjoy researching there.”
