Passengers on an early morning train got stuck for up to six hours after it came to a halt near Rainham Railway Station.

It is thought the train had no heating as some passengers were tweeting they were freezing cold.

One man asked how long passengers would be stuck on the train.

Gellies@safriuc tweeted about the situation about an hour ago.

He said: "Any idea how much longer the passengers on 08.49 from Sittingbourne to Victoria need to be frozen on the train outside Rainham station?!?!?!"

However, Angus Walker, @anguswalkertalk at later posted a video which suggests the train has now reached Rainham Railway Station.

He said: "Made it - 6 hours since the train left Ramsgate #snow #ice #stormemma"

Gellies@safriuc later said everyone eventually got off the train at 2.20pm.

It is not clear how the train got stuck on the track but Southeastern Trains has issued a do not travel warning for the entire network, with some trains already suspended because of icy conditions.

A joint statement from Southeastern and Network Rail said: “We are currently experiencing severe difficulties with the train service across our entire network as a result of freezing rain and ice forming on conductor rails, which our trains use to pick up power.

"We apologise sincerely to anyone who has been inconvenienced on one of our trains today.

"The exceptional conditions have stranded a number of trains and we are putting every effort into providing assistance to them as soon as we can.

“As a result of the issues caused by these weather conditions, we’re currently advising people not to travel on our network."
