A shopping centre will be transformed into a mass Covid-19 vaccination centre from next week, it is understood.

The Pentagon in Chatham is to be used to administer jabs and speed up the vaccine rollout in Medway, KMTV has been told.

The Towns were lagging behind other parts of Kent, according to figures released last week.

It is set to join four other large-scale centres in Folkestone, Thanet, Tonbridge and Gravesend.

Labour group leader on Medway Council, Cllr Vince Maple, welcomed the news.

"Many people, if they see Medway as a city, effectively see Chatham as the city centre," he said.

"We've got good bus and rail links here as well so even people who perhaps don't live in Chatham will be able to access it through public transport."

Cllr Maple, who represents Chatham Central, added: "Frankly any site in Medway will be very welcome indeed. Residents in my ward have had to go all the way over to Strood.

"That's not a long distance in some sense but still it's quite a considerable journey on public transport."
