Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters.

Twenty years ago petrol heads Ross Hutchinson and his younger brother Ryde thought it would be a crazy idea to buy a replica of the iconic car which starred in the original 1984 movie.

But a double tragedy struck the family and the ambitious project to restore the Cadillac hearse was put on hold.

The year after the £20,000 vehicle was shipped from Florida, Ryde, 18, was killed in a car accident with his girlfriend.

Grief-stricken Ross and dad John were determined to make the vehicle roadworthy.

Then in 2009 heartbreak hit again when John lost his three-year battle with lung cancer.

For the next decade the car languished on a Twydall driveway, shrouded under tarpaulin.

As the years slipped by and Ross became a dad to Sofia, 10, and Felix, seven, he decided to revive the ambition to get the vintage car up-and-running.

After work was then hampered by lockdown, Ross relied on the goodwill of local companies recovering from the effects of the pandemic to support him.

Now fully insured and with an MOT, the car has made a maiden journey on the open road – and certainly turned a few heads.

The special needs teacher said: "It's a wonder it hasn't caused an accident.

"Who'd have thought a daft idea we had all those years ago – just a fun thing to do – would now be putting smiles on people's faces? It transforms people back to their childhoods.

"I pulled up at a garage forecourt in Hempstead and it was like being with a celebrity. People wanted pictures of themselves with the car. The response has been amazing."

Ross, 43, now plans to hire it out for shows and special occasions and is even considering using it as a novel hearse for movie and car fans.

He's already had interest from the UK and Europe from organisations and businesses which want to use it for promotions.

Fittingly, it will be officially launched in July to mark what would have been Ryde's 38th birthday.

He added: "I think he would have been proud, but also curious about the interest it has caused."

Meanwhile son Felix, a number one fan of the smash hit sci-fi film and all of the paraphernalia that goes with it, is "gobsmacked" by the new addition to the household.

Ross kept the project under wraps and revealed the renovated vehicle as a surprise for him.

He said: "He was absolutely speechless."
