Thousands of people flocked to the English Festival at Riverside Country Park yesterday.

The site in Lower Rainham Road was transformed into a typical snapshot of British life with donkey rides on the beach, a village square, rides on red buses and a string quartet.

Pie and mash was on the menu and there was also tea and scones and iced Pimm's for those who wanted to lap up the day in style.

For children, there was a funfair and a pet’s corner, while older ones could pick up Kentish produce at the farmers’ market.

It is the fifth year since Medway Council decided to take the lead and celebrate England’s patron saint and each year the festival is held on the closest Saturday to St George’s Day.

The council's operations director Verne Sanderson estimated that 15,000 people had enjoyed the day.
