The National Diversity Awards is back to recognise and celebrate communities who tackle social issues.

Medway Pride Radio has been nominated for the community organisation award for LGBT.

Shea Coffey explains what the station does

Co-founder and manager Shea Coffey, 48, launched the station in lockdown as a small project and has been running it for 15 months.

Over this period the team has expanded from 12 to 50 DJs, broadcasting 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

It has a wide listenership with people tuning in from as far a part as Australia, Canada, America, Germany, Hungary and Poland.

It has also had support from famous faces like journalist Mark Segal and Hollywood film-maker John Waters, who came on the show to talk about his new book.

Not only has the station, which is based in High Street, Rochester, helped the LGBTQ+ community, but it has also held discos for Autism Awareness Week.

Other campaigns have included drop-in centres for Transgender Day of Remembrance where people could get help and support.

Shea said: "We've just got involved in the community and had a lot of fun with it.

"It seems they have been kind enough to get involved with us."

She also said that getting to the finals and being in a room with organisations that support minority areas would be a win in itself.

The National Pride Awards will be taking place in Liverpool on September 15.
