An immigrant working in a Rainham restaurant has been deported.

The 21-year-old man from Bangladesh was found in a UK Border Agency raid on Raj Rani restaurant in Rainham High Street.

Officers arrested the man, along with a 30-year-old, who both failed to leave the country after their visas expired.

The 21-year-old was deported on Sunday and the 30-year-old remains in detention pending his removal from the country.

The Raj Rani has been handed a penalty notice for employing illegal workers. To avoid a fine of up to £20,000, owners must provide evidence that the correct pre-employment checks were made on the men.

Jackie Fowler, head of the agency’s local immigration team in Kent, said: "The UK Border Agency is determined to stamp out abuse of the immigration system.

"We want the public to contact us if they have any information on businesses or people who are breaking immigration law." Employers unsure of the steps they need to take to avoid employing illegal workers can visit ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk or phone the UK Border Agency’s Employers Helpline on 0300 123 4699.

Anyone who suspects illegal workers are being employed at a business in Medway can email intelkent@homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk or phone 01303 247070.
