Recycling efforts need to be stepped up

The council is in the process of setting its own targets for a seven-year waste contract, currently held by the French service firm, Veolia.

The council plans to recycle cooked food and meal waste with garden rubbish and introduce black and blue wheelie bins.

To avoid smells and maggots on alternative weeks, the waste can be put in black bags.

In a further step towards recycling more than half the borough’s waste by 2020, it was revealed households can already put out glass for kerbside collection. But no-one has yet been officially told.

Glass can be put it out in blue bins and bags, mixed with paper and card but pyrex and light bulbs go into black bags.

Full publicity is planned during August.
