A videographer has swapped weddings for the big screen thanks to an Amazon Prime series filmed in Kent.

Simon Burridge, from Rochester, has spent £5,000 on his web series pilot episode, The Tab Theory, which starred EastEnders' actor, Ricky Groves.

The 47-year-old, who also part owns Cherrywood Productions, said: "I usually film weddings and business promotional videos but when there was no work during lockdown, I decided to write a 30-page script for a comedy pilot.

"It got a good response from friends, family, and some experts who have done it before so I thought while the pandemic was going on, I'd start planning a shoot through the gaps of lockdown."

The production took about six months due to Covid restrictions. Simon and his wife Rachel, 35, worked together on the project which was shot around Higham and Strood.

Simon explained that a lot of his inspiration came from his humour, which is very similar to Ricky Gervais' in the hit show After Life.

He said: "The show is about two friends, one who wants to be a ventriloquist and the other a scientist who wants to create invisibility.

"When they're at school they have a bet over who is going to be the most successful first.

"Roll on 30 years, one of them wins the bid but needs the other one to help them because they've got in some serious trouble."

Simon's show passed the qualifications to stream on Amazon Prime thanks to its video quality, subtitles and correct copyright deals on the music.

It has been available to viewers across the UK and the USA since last September and Simon receives over 50 hits a day despite very minimal advertising.

He added: "It only took a week to be vetted by Amazon and it was lucky that I had a friend from Los Angeles who is a musician, Melinda Ortner.

"This meant all our music in the show was recorded by her, which was great."

Jamie Bannerman, Rob Marni and Simon Burridge play the main characters during the episode.

Simon also has a role as a 'pervy' talent agent in the show – after numerous part readings it was decided he portrayed the outlandish character best.

The Tab Theory has received an honourable mention at both the Seasonal Comedy Awards and the Hollywood New Director Awards.

It is also a finalist in the Lit Laughter Awards which are taking place this weekend.

Simon added: "There's no time line for the next episode, only the pilot has been created for now.

"It's really just been put out there to see if any agencies want to take it on, with or without me.

"It's one of those storylines which could go absolutely anywhere, which is what I like about it.

"I've just put it out there as a taster as my first ever attempt at an entertainment series."
